Summary

The growing accumulation of space debris poses a significant threat, including the risk of Kessler Syndrome, satellite collisions, and potential damage on Earth. To address this, South Korea and international partners are developing two primary approaches: Post-Mission Disposal (PMD) for self-disposal of satellites after their operational life, and Active Debris Removal (ADR) using various contact and contactless technologies to directly remove existing space debris. These technologies are currently in various stages of research and development, with some successful in-space demonstrations and future plans for further testing and implementation.
