COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION of 14 March 2023 on Energy Storage – Underpinning a decarbonised and secure EU energy system

Summary

The European Union aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, which requires significant flexibility in the energy system to integrate the projected 69% share of renewable energy by 2030. This recommendation urges Member States to remove regulatory and procedural barriers to energy storage deployment, identify system flexibility needs, and promote storage and demand response technologies to underpin a decarbonised and secure EU energy system. This initiative is currently in progress as Member States are encouraged to implement these recommendations.
