Molecular mechanisms of mycorrhizal‐decomposer interactions and impacts on terrestrial biogeochemistry
Summary
Understanding how soil microorganisms regulate carbon and nutrient flow, and thus greenhouse gas emissions, remains a significant challenge. This project developed a synthetic greenhouse ecosystem and an advanced ecosystem model to investigate how ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) control these processes and how pine encroachment influences soil biogeochemistry. The findings indicate that EMF strongly regulate soil carbon cycling and nutrient release through complex interactions with plants and other microbes, leading to new frameworks for ecosystem modeling and improved predictions for forest biogeochemical processes.
