Summary

This project aimed to understand the integration of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) with the electric grid, specifically their impact on utility operations and their ability to interconnect. NREL and Xcel Energy collaborated on simulations and then conducted lab and field testing of modified Ford Escape Hybrid Vehicles to assess grid performance, emissions, and operational data. The project is completed, and while testing was limited, it yielded early insights into PHEV technology, contributed to the development of future test procedures, and informed industry direction.
