Commercialization of Pumped Storage Hydropower Technologies

Summary

The U.S. electricity system needs reliable, flexible energy storage to integrate variable renewable resources, but new Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH) capacity development has stalled for decades despite its proven benefits. This report, part of the HydroWIRES Initiative, aims to accelerate PSH commercialization by gathering industry insights and best practices. The project is currently in progress, having produced this report and an online resource hub, with an overarching goal to support new PSH technology and capacity additions.
